Today- June 1st- is the anniversary of the Anglo-French naval battle in 1794 that we Brits call 'THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE'' fought in the Bay of Biscay area and Ushant. The Royal Navy led by Admiral Howe intercepted a vital convoy of grain ships from the USA heading to the French republic which Britain opposed. But I am not sure about the ''Glorious' moniker because although Howe's fleet sank seven of the vital grain ships (merde!) other French ships safely got through. Howe's success was due to his willingness -like Horation Nelson- to adopt unorthodox tactics as Howe ordered his ships to attack in an unusual formation. However, the French Admiral Villaret, could claim that the ''Glorious First of June' battle was a draw as he achieved some of the French objectives by delivering some of the much needed American grain to mainland France. This was the first major naval clash -the first of many culminating at Trafalgar- the French navy had with their British counterparts. between 1794-1815. However, it is not marked as Trafalgar Day October 21st-is /used to be in the Royal Navy.
