I was going to create two separate threads for this, but to avoid cluttering the forums or coming across as annoying I thought I'd combine them in to one. I'm searching for suggestions for books that go in to detail on Scottish history during the early-modern era, specifically in either of these two periods:
1) The first period is Scotland between about the 1780s to the 1830s. I've been doing reading on the involvement of Scots in trade and colonization in North America around that period, so now I'm interested in learning a bit more on what the situation was like back in Scotland at that time, to get a better understanding of the world those Scots in America had come from.
2) The second period is pretty much the entirety of the 17th century after the union of the crowns in 1603. I've done some background reading but I'm a relative beginner to this era in Scotland so I'd really like to learn more in-depth about topics such as Scotland's involvement in the British Civil Wars, the effects of their failed colonial adventures on the situation at home, the reactions in the Highlands to the Statutes of Iona, etc.
I didn't find the right solution from the internet. References: http://hi storum.com/european-history/128617-ideas-sources-early-modern-scottish-history.html Animated Startup Marketing Video
