TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays won ugly Tuesday night, overcoming sloppy play and a blown six-run lead in a 7-6 walkoff victory over the New York Yankees. Jose Reyes made two throwing errors -- including a key miscue in New Yorks five-run seventh inning -- but made up for it by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. New York made the final mistake as Yangervis Solarte threw wide to first base after Melky Cabrera laid a bunt down the third-base line. That allowed Reyes, who led off with a double, to trot home with the winning run to the delight of the 34,206 fans at Rogers Centre. "It wasnt a real well-played game, but the name of the game is winning," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. Dioner Navarro hit a three-run shot for Toronto (44-35), which moved 2 1/2 games up on second-place Baltimore in the American League East. The Orioles dropped a 4-2 decision to the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees fourth loss in a row moved them 3 1/2 games behind Toronto. Reliever Adam Warren (1-4) shouldered the loss for New York (39-37). "It was sloppy on both sides," said Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. "That was an ugly game to watch. If youre a fan, you should get your money back." The Blue Jays will go for a sweep of the three-game series Wednesday night. Navarro put the Blue Jays on the board in the fourth inning with his blast off New York starter David Phelps. Toronto tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning when Colby Rasmus laced a shot that hit the top of the wall in right field. Two runs came across on the play and Edwin Encarnacion rounded third when Rasmus broke for second base. The cutoff man threw to Derek Jeter at second, who had Rasmus caught in a rundown. With Encarnacion leaning for home, Jeter decided to hang on to the ball and go for the tag on Rasmus. However, he couldnt catch up to the Toronto centre-fielder, who dived back to the bag at first base as Encarnacion scored. Jeter rebounded with a solo homer in the sixth inning and the Yankees took advantage of two Toronto errors in the seventh to tie the game. Brian Roberts got things started by hitting a two-run homer off Toronto starter Mark Buehrle to cut the Blue Jays lead to 6-3. With Brett Gardner at second base and Jeter at first, Jacoby Ellsbury drove a single to left field off Dustin McGowan. Cabrera tried to get Gardner at the plate but the throw went to the backstop allowing the run to score on the error as both runners advanced. McGowan got Teixeira to hit a chopper to second base but Reyes was short with his throw to Encarnacion at first and two more runs crossed the plate. It gave Reyes even more incentive when he came up to bat in the ninth. "I tried to make something happen after that mistake,"Reyes said. "They tied the game there in that situation. I have to make a better throw than that. It is what it is. Like I said, when I came up in the ninth inning I just tried to make something happen. "I put a good swing on the ball and hit a double with nobody out." Reyes also gave credit to Cabrera for making a great play that forced the errant throw. "He laid down a perfect bunt," he said. "In that situation we need that." It was the 13th multi-hit game of the season for Reyes, who ended an 0-for-19 skid with a single in the fifth inning. "Joses a driven individual," Gibbons said. "Plus hes overdue, his bat has cooled off. So it was just a matter of time. He dunked that one in earlier in the game, but hes been missing his pitches. "Hes been a little too aggressive. But perfect timing for it, you know." Encarnacion was accidentally elbowed in the back of the head by Teixeira in the seventh inning. The Toronto slugger was face down on the dirt for several seconds as a hush came over the crowd. Gibbons and a team trainer came out onto the field to check on him and Encarnacion eventually shook it off and stayed in the game. He had a fat lip afterwards but said there were no other issues. "Right now I feel good, I feel great -- 100 per cent," he said. Aaron Loup relieved McGowan in the seventh and got Carlos Beltran to hit a comebacker for the third out. The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the eighth inning but reliever Dellin Betances struck out Munenori Kawasaki to end the threat. Casey Janssen (2-0) came on in the ninth inning and gave up a single to Gardner, who eventually moved to third base with two out. With the crowd on its feet, Janssen fanned Teixiera with a 72 mile-per-hour curveball. "Thats big to win that game," Gibbons said. "We dont win that one last year, I know that." Notes: Lind fouled a ball off his sore right foot in the seventh inning but stayed in the game. The Bundesliga club said in a statement that the former Liverpool defender Hyypia was being released "with immediate effect" following Fridays 2-1 loss at relegation-threatened Hamburger SV. Lewandowski stepped back to resume coaching Leverkusens youth side after securing Champions League qualification with Hyypia last season. He has been charged with securing at least fourth place in the Bundesliga to repeat the feat this time around. "He helped us out in a critical situation once before when he worked alongside Sami Hyypia following the release of Robin Dutt," Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller said. "Were firmly convinced he will succeed again." Leverkusen previously drew with bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig and is in danger of losing fourth place, with both Wolfsburg and Borussia Moenchengladbach in a position to overtake on Saturday. "This decision was more than difficult because Sami did a brilliant job over the last two years," Voeller said. Leverkusen was second at one point in the Bundesliga but had a severe change in fortune after the winter break with only three wins from 12 league games this year. IIt has also endured humiliating losses to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and second-division Kaiserslautern in the German Cup.dddddddddddd "What he and his coaching staff achieved with the team in the first half of the season was well beyond expectations and earned him praise from all sides," Voeller said. "Thats why the current slump is even more painful for us. The dramatic events of the last few weeks leave us no other choice but to bring about a separation. We want to and have to try everything to save the season." Assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte was also released. "Its not an easy situation for me now to take Samis place," Lewandowski said. His teammates chose him player of the game, so he got to wear the special fighter-pilot type of helmet. Its something Ive dreamed about for a long time, the 21-year-old native of Calgary said about his first NHL goal.So its a pretty special feeling to tip it and see the puck go through (goalie Anton Khudobins) legs.Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves in the win, while Khudobin faced 26 shots.Andrew Ladd and then Dustin Byfuglien on a breakaway also scored for the Jets (2-4-0), who won their first game at home this season.Jiri Tlusty scored on the power play for Carolina (0-3-2), which is still looking for its first win of the season and had been coming off back-to-back overtime losses.Ladd opened the games scoring with his first goal of the year at 1:57 and Lowry netted his 40 seconds later.Carolina head coach Bill Peters said his players couldnt overcome the bad start. We got away from our structure and then we were freelancing and then it just made it harder than it needs to be, he said.Peters said itll take an attitude adjustment to get the seasons first win.Its going to take responsible play by all 18 guys, he said.Everyones got to be on the same page, everyones got to be hungry in order for it to happen.Ladds goal was reviewed after a scramble in front the net led to the puck going onto Khudobins back and then down his pad and across the goal-line.Lowry redirected Grant Clitsomes shot from the point at 2:37.It was a reversal of fortune for the Jets, who had three goals scored on them in just under seven minutes last Sunday in a 4-1 loss to Calgary. The two goals also equalled the number the Jets had scored during their four-game losing skid.Clitsome smiled and said the players didnt realize right away it was Lowrys first NHL goal. If they had, he said, they would have celebrated more.I think spirits are good now, Clitsome said. It was a pressure game. We needed the win and weve been talking a lot about it in the room. Not only did we get the win, but I thought we played really well.We eliminated their chances, we shut them down along the neutral zone and didnt give them a whole lot.Jeff Skinner, Carolinas top goal-scorer last season, made his season debut after missing the first four games with a concussion. Defenceman Andrej Sekera was also on the ice after sitting out the last game with an upper-body injury.Skinners first game back was more memorable for the two penalties he got, while Sekera had one.The Jets carried a power play into the third period on Skinners high-sticking penalty, and then had 11 seconds with a two-man advantage when Sekera was called for hooking. Winnipeg made five shots on net.It was good to have him back, but we need Jeff Skinner, you know what I mean? Peters said.People think youre going to parachute in the lineup and be a star, its not the way it works. We need him to get assertive and play responsibly.Tlustys fourth goal of the season off a rebound at 7:03 of the first period was reviewed to ensure his stick touched the puck before it went past Pavelec.Winnipeg outshot the Hurricanes 11-9 in the opening period. The second period was scoreless until Byfuglien made it 3-1 at 16:26.Carolina couldnt hang on to the puck in Winnipegs end and Byfuglien picked it up, used his speed to stay ahead of defenceman Justin Faulk and then shot a backhand between Khudobins pads.We got some good blocks and some good second efforts at those critical times and some good saves, Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. Both teams had difficulty getting shots in the second period, with Carolina having the 5-4 edge.Winnipeg was 0 for 5 on the power play. The Jets havent scored a power-play goal this season after 19 opportunities.Carolina was 1 for 5 with the man advantage.Winnipeg hosts Tampa Bay on Friday for the third game of a five-game homestand.Carolina heads off to Calgary for its third game of a five-game road trip through Western Canada on Thursday. At this point, even he isnt sure when it is going to stop. The right-hander dropped his fourth straight decision in Los Angeles 6-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night, leaving his status very much in doubt as the Dodgers prepare for the stretch drive. "Its just really gotten away from me the last four times out," Haren said. "I dont what to say. I was having a great year. I felt great about everything, the way I was throwing the ball. But now everything has snowballed and everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong." Haren (8-8) is winless with a 9.47 ERA in July and he is well aware he has become the weak link on one of baseballs best pitching staffs. Though manager Don Mattingly said "its not the right time to talk about (Harens) future," Haren understands his grasp on his starting job is becoming tenuous. "Im going to do anything for the team," Haren said. "If that means I get skipped, I totally understand. Its not like Im going to march into the office and say, You cant do that. Im new here. I need to earn their respect." The Pirates wasted little time getting to Haren. Josh Harrisons two-run double down the left field line capped a four-run outburst that gave Francisco Liriano (2-7) all the offence he would need to win for the first time since May 30. Pittsburgh improved to 5-1 since the All-Star break to move a season-high seven games over .500 (54-47). Travis Snider added two hits, including his fifth homer, for the Pirates. Liriano allowed one run on four hits over seven innings to earn his first regular-season home victory in nearly a year. "Im not at the point I want to be yet but everything is getting better and everything is moving forward," Liriano said. For Haren, not so much. Two singles and a walk in the first loaded the bases with one out before Haren walked Russell Martin on a full count to hand the Pirates the lead. Ike Davis followed with a sacrifice fly, and Harrison sent a stinging double to left to push the advantage to 4-0. "The first pitch of a game was a strike and then they swing at the next three pitches and I steppped back after that and said to myself that I needed to make better pitches," Haren said.dddddddddddd "But then I nibbled around guys and couldnt throw a strike. I just couldnt do anything right." Snider made it 5-0 when he hit the fifth pitch of the second inning to the last row of seats in right field. Though Haren settled down to eventually retire the last 11 batters he faced, by then the damage was done. Los Angeles didnt have a hit until Miguel Rojas doubled with one out in the fifth and never threatened as Liriano put together his best start of the year. It didnt start out that way. The left-hander has struggled with his command all season and it looked like more of the same in the first after consecutive one-out walks to Matt Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez. Liriano escaped after striking out Scott Van Slyke and getting Juan Uribe to fly out to right. Liriano didnt let the cushion go to waste. Showing flashes of the form that allowed him to win 16 games in 2013, Liriano kept the Dodgers patched-together offence off balance. Rojas finally broke through with a sinking line drive to left with one out in the fifth glanced off the glove of Snider. Los Angeles pulled to 5-1 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kemp, but the Dodgers would get no closer as Pittsburgh improved to 34-21 at PNC Park, the best home record in the National League. Kicker magazine said that Thomas Schaaf (former Werder Bremen coach), Markus Weinzierl (Augsburg), Armin Veh (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Jos Luhukay (Hertha Berlin) are all possible candidates to take over from next season. Hyypia is the seventh coach to lose his job in the Bundesliga this season, following the dismissals of Bruno Labbadia and his successor Thomas Schneider at Stuttgart, Thorsten Fink and his successor Bert van Marwijk at Hamburger SV, Michael Wiesinger at Nuremberg and Mirko Slomka at Hannover.
