When we approach the year 1848 in Europe and look at it from the perspective of the revolutionaries, would you grade that year as a succesful year for the Revolutionary flames popping up across Europe or not?
France saw the Citizen-King Louis-Philippe removed from power, though would see a restoration of a second quite similar monarchy only three years later under Louis Bonaparte. The Hungarian uprising was crushed, though resulted eventually in the Austro-Hungarian compromise. The Revolution in Germany forced the hands of Frederick William IV to agree on an assembly in Frankfurt formed up by liberals, but that same King later crushed his own parliament by enforcing a newly centralized constitution. The few trouble makers in the Netherlands saw a constitution imposed, restricting the King's power. In Italy some of the uprisings are somewhat succesful, but those that were not crushed would later see most of their fruits removed as well.
This is the physical side of the argument. Mentally and perhaps spiritually though the Revolutions did see ultimate change. Not only was divine right unanimously accepted or at least tolerated, but it was actually challenged across the continent. This made monarchs not only more aware of popular support, but it would be a deciding factor in a number of their ventures. It was also the year in which a new Bonaparte rose to power, forever shifting the balance of power once again by breaking the Waterloo coalition. Spirtually it saw the rise of a number on intellectuals challenging the status quo and was in the end also a catalyst for widening the suffrage percentage.I have some questions i ask some of them to my friend who run Video Production Service but they cant help so i publish here.
Politically though for most of the century the status quo would not change. Other than Britain, France, the Low Countries and Scandinavia most European rulers would remain firmly in control of their countries until World War I.
What is your verdict? Was the Revolution year of 1848 a succes for those who initiated it or a failure and what do you base your assesment on?
